The device came as a result of Nexbit’s acquisition by the company. The Phone follows the same design and aesthetics as that of the Nexbit Robin, but with few improvements internally. The announcement was made at the official Razer Facebook page. The post clearly mentioned that they will be jumping right to Android 8.1 Oreo, with the final release planned for April 2018. However, the company chose not to provide any release notes for the Dev Preview. On the other hand, XDA discovered that it brings Project Treble compatibility to the device, along with February 2018 security patch. It likely that the latest March or April security patch will be accompanying the final release. Other features inlucde new Dolby app, double-tap to sleep gesture and display profiles.

Android 8.1 Oreo Developer Preview for Razer Phone is available as a factory image. Which means users won’t be allowed to update over-the-air and will need to manually carry out the complete procedure. It’s worth noting that installing a factory image requires your phone to have an unlocked bootloader, thus breaking the warranty. Well, that seems absurd considering that the OEM itself has provided the preview, but doesn’t recommend unlocking the bootloader at the same time. Prerequisites

  • You must first enable OEM unlocking in Settings and unlock Razer Phone bootloader.
  • Charge your Razer Phone to at least 50-60% battery level in order to prevent any shutdowns during the flashing process.
  • Install Android SDK tools on your PC.
  • Use a spec-compliant USB Type-C to Type-A cable for flashing the factory image (Benson Leung).

Instructions to Install Razer Phone Android 8.1 Oreo Developer Preview

  1. Download Android 8.1 Oreo Factory image.
  2. Extract the downloaded file on the PC.
  3. Move the contents of the extracted folder to C:/adb.
    • This is the folder where the ADB/Fastboot binaries are present.
  4. Power off your device.
  5. Boot into Fastboot mode (Also known as Download Mode).
  6. To do so, hold the Volume Down and Power button simultaneously.
  7. Connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable.
  8. Go to the folder (cheryl-O-devpreview-1) where the factory image files are present.
  9. On Windows, double-click the ‘flash-all.bat‘ file to install Razer Phone Android 8.1 Oreo Developer Preview.

  10. On Linux, launch the Terminal and use the following command to install Android 8.1 Oreo Factory Image on Razer Phone:
    ./flash-all.sh
  11. The command-line window shall open on the screen and begin the flashing process.
  12. Once complete, the device will reboot automatically.

When your device boots, you shall be prompted to set it up. So follow the on-screen instructions. You should then be able to use Android 8.1 Oreo on Razer Phone and enjoy all the latest features.
