ZTE’s sub-brand Nubia is one of the most innovative Chinese manufacture, known for providing high-end smartphones at a reasonable value. Today, at a press event in Beijing, China, the company has announced its latest flagship phone – Nubia Z18, as a successor to Nubia Z17 that was launched last year.
As a flagship phone, the Nubia Z18 is equipped with some top-notch specs and a modern design, that makes it a tough competitor to other flagship devices out there. Below is everything about the Nubia Z18 that we know so far.
Design & Display
When it comes to the appearance, the Nubia Z18 has a shiny curved glass back along with a metal frame, with regard to provide a better grip. Like the Nubia Z18 mini It has a horizontally aligned dual-camera setup at the back, together with a fingerprint sensor and a ‘Nubia’ logo at the center. At the bottom of the phone, there’s a USB Type-C port followed by speaker grills. However, the phone lacks a 3.5 mm headphone jack and microSD card slot like its predecessor.
On the front is a 5.99-inch FHD+ massive display, that has a 96% NTSC color gamut and a pixel density of 403 PPI. Like the Oppo R17, It also uses a circular notch at the top of the display, giving it a massive screen to body ratio of 91.8%. In addition, the front panel has a 2.5D curved glass, with pretty minimal bezels on its sides. Apart from that, The notch at the top, which Nubia calls ‘beautiful tip’, houses a front facing camera that has red ascent around it. It is worth mentioning that the phone also adopts an earpiece on the forehead.
The Nubia Z18 is driven by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, clocked at 2.8Ghz. The processor paired with whopping 6GB/8GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The phone is fueled by a 3,450 mAh battery with support for NeoPower technology and Quick Charge 3.0 (9V 2A). The Nubia Z18 is also armed by a NeoSmart AI engine, with an aim to improve the power consumption of the phone.
Moving towards the software, the Nubia Z18 is equipped with custom Nubia UI 6.0 version, that has some native apps preloaded on the phone. As claimed by the company, the apps launching speed has been increased by up to 49%. The UI also comes with support for the full-screen gesture that has quite simple controls. The phone is running on Android 8.1 Oreo, and currently, there’s no information regarding when it will be upgraded to Android Pie.
In addition, the Nubia Z18 is loaded with an ET (Evolution Tenser) technology, which includes many AI functions like AI Voice 2.0, AI face unlocking, AI smart service, etc. According to the company, The ET technology has improved the learning efficiency of the phone by 200% and made the device compatible with Caffe, Pytorch, TensorFlow and other training frameworks. Apart from that, the phone is equipped with 4×4 MIMO multi-antenna, increasing the data transmission rate by 100%, up to 640Mbps. The phone also supports 4G+ full Netcom covering 98% of countries and regions.
The Nubia Z18 is equipped with a dual camera setup, that has a 16MP (F/1.6) primary sensor and a 24MP (F/1.6) secondary sensor, capable of taking brighter shots in low lighting conditions. The main lens has a Sony’s IMX499 sensor and comes with support for Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and multi-point focus. The front camera is an 8MP (F/2.0) shooter, equipped with features like self-timer, portrait Blurring, AI smart scenes, AI photo albums, and portrait mode 2.0.
The Nubia Z18 is equipped with Spectra 280 ISPs, in order to provide powerful support for taking photos. In addition, The Nubian Z18 includes a NeoVision ET engine, that brings smarter photo experience. It is worth mentioning that the phone is also equipped with DTS + D-BASS dual combination in order to provide more dynamic bass and more stereo sound field.
Pricing details, Availability
The Nubia Z18 is available in two color variants, which are ‘Extreme Night Black’ and ‘Nebula Red’. There’s also a special Van Gogh Starry Collector’s edition of the phone, inspired by Van Gogh’s famous painting “Starry Sky”.
The Nubia Z18 base variant with 6GB RAM + 64GB storage variant is priced at 2,799 Chinese Yuan (~$410). The high-end variant of the phone with 8GB RAM + 128GB storage carries a price tag of 3,299 Chinese Yuan (~$480). The special Collector’s edition is priced at 3,599 Chinese Yuan (~$525). The Nubia 18 will go on sale from September 11 through Nubia’s official website and JD.com.
