The official announcement was posted on the OnePlus forums by Manu J. To note, this is a full ROM upgrade that is sized around 1.6GB, and is now rolling out over-the-air in stages. Now before you get along the instructions and install OxygenOS 5.1.2 update on OnePlus 5/5T, let us take a quick look at the changes and new features that it brings. According to the release thread, following is the changelog for this update:

  • May 2018 Android Security Patches
  • Fixed auto-rotation stability issue
  • Places: a map view of photos by location
  • Added “Recently Deleted” collection
  • Fixed Wi-Fi connecting issue
  • Double-tap to lock screen in the OnePlus launcher
  • Fixed microphone not functioning issue for AKG earphones

As again, the software is based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The changelog, however, is not just limited to that. According to several users on the forums, the older ‘Dash charging’ charging label/notification is now replaced with ‘Charging rapidly’. That’s because the company has lost the trademark to Amazon (More info here). Another user was able to pinpoint a minor redesign to the notification panel. On OxygenOS 5.1.2, the padding from the top of the screen is the same as seen on OOS 5.0.4.

How to Install OxygenOS 5.1.2 Update on OnePlus 5/5T?

Now, there are two different methods that you can follow. Users who are running completely stock and unrooted OxygenOS firmware (Stable/Open Beta) can follow Method 1. For those with root/TWRP recovery and choose method 2 to install OxygenOS 5.1.2 update on OnePlus 5/5T.

Method 1: Using Local Upgrade

  1. Download OxygenOS 5.1.2 full ROM ZIP for the device.
  2. Connect the OnePlus 5/5T to the PC using the USB cable.
  3. Transfer the ROM ZIP file to the root of the phone’s internal storage.
  4. Disconnect the device from the PC.
  5. Go to ‘Settings’ > ‘System updates’.

  6. Tap on the gear icon on the top-right of the screen and select the ‘Local Upgrade’ option.
  7. The phone will automatically detect the update package.
  8. Tap on the full ROM ZIP.

  9. Finally, tap on ‘Upgrade Now’ to install OxygenOS 5.1.2 update on OnePlus 5/5T.

The flashing process will finish and the phone will automatically reboot into the updated software. After upgrading, boot into stock recovery and go to ‘Wipe data and cache’ > ‘Wipe cache’ and press ‘OK’ to clear the cache. This will prevent any unusual bugs after the update.

Method 2: Using TWRP Recovery

  1. Download the OxygenOS 5.1.2 full ROM ZIP.
  2. Connect the OnePlus 5/5T to the PC using the USB cable.
  3. Transfer the downloaded full ROM ZIP to the phone’s storage.
  4. Disconnect the device and power it off.
  5. Hold the Volume Down and Power button simultaneously to boot into the TWRP recovery.
  6. [Optional] If your device currently has a custom ROM installed, then you will need to wipe the OS.
    • Go to ‘Wipe’ > ‘Advanced Wipe’ and select the ‘Dalvik/ART Cache’, ‘system’, ‘data’ and ‘Cache’ partitions.

    • Then swipe the button on the screen.
  7. Go back to the main TWRP screen and press the ‘Install’ button.
  8. Navigate to the internal storage and select the OxygenOS full ROM ZIP.
  9. Finally, swipe the button on the screen to install OxygenOS 5.1.2 update on OnePlus 5/5T.

The process could take some time to finish, so leave the phone undisturbed during this period. Once done, press the ‘Reboot System’ button. The phone will reboot into the updated OxygenOS firmware with the latest May 2018 security patches and further improved software experience.
