Unlock Bootloader on Huawei

Unlocking your device’s bootloader opens the gate to endless modifications and tweaking, and it is also considered as the first thing to do when stepping into the custom Android universe. With this tutorial, we are going to help you unlock bootloader on Huawei devices.

Update (3 October 2018): Huawei has officially stopped supporting bootloader unlock. If you’re still interested in unlocking the bootloader, you will be forced to use a third-party tool/service like DC-Unlocker or (Preferred). Please note that most of these tools/services are to be paid for.

All Huawei-built Android smartphones come with a locked bootloader because the OEM wants its device’s integrity to stay top-notch, serving the most secure Android environment for their users, right out-of-the-box.

So it once you have it unlocked you can perform various actions like overwriting the stock recovery with TWRP or even flash stock firmware by issuing appropriate commands.

Huawei, just like other Android manufacturers (HTC, Sony, Google, and LG) provides you official instructions to unlock your phone’s bootloader. While the unlocking command remains the same, Huawei requires your device specific unlock code for the command to work. The instructions below will help you do that for any Huawei device that supports bootloader unlocking. So lets hit it!

While Huawei does offer unlocking bootloader, but if you bear any damage to the device post-unlocking, it won’t be covered under the official warranty. But it’s not the same for us if you face any problems during or post the unlock, we will be here to help you to the best of our capabilities.

  • Before you head over to the steps, it should be noted that your device will factory reset itself during the process and all your data including the internal storage will be completely wiped off. So take a complete backup of your device first.
  • After you have taken a full backup, it is wise that you charge your phone to a sufficient battery level, so that it doesn’t die out of juice during the process. If it does, the risk is higher than you might be able to recover it back on your own.
  • Since we are going to unlock using Fastboot commands, you will need to have ADB and Fastboot properly set up on your PC. For this, you can use the standalone package, if you know how to use it.
  • Enable USB debugging on your Huawei device. Don’t know how to do it? Follow our tutorial.

How to Unlock Bootloader on Huawei Devices?

The process of unlocking the bootloader on Huawei devices is split into two parts – First, where you acquire the device-specific unlock code and second, where you use the code to finally unlock the bootloader. Both the steps have been detailed below, so make sure to follow them correctly.

Step 1: Get the unlock code

  1. Acquiring an unlock code requires you to log in using Huawei ID. So you either should have one already or register for a new ID on Huawei during the initial stage of the process.
  2. You will need to note down a few details before you can request for an unlock code. So take a hold of your device and open the dialer/phone application. Enter *#*#1357946#*#* and note down the product ID. Next, go to Settings > About phone and save the IMEI/MEID, model number and, serial number.
  3. Now that you have all the needed information, visit the official Huawei unlock page (Huawei has stopped the bootloader unlocking program officially) and log in with your Huawei ID. You will be taken to an unlocking agreement, scroll down to the bottom, accept the terms and hit Next.

Step 2: Unlocking the bootloader

Again, make sure that you have a complete back up of your storage. Unlocking your device will erase everything and restore it back to factory settings.

Now that you have everything you need to unlock bootloader on Huawei, let us begin.

  1. Reboot your Huawei smartphone into bootloader mode. Power off the device completely, wait for 2-4 seconds and then press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys altogether for around 10 seconds. If you have a Huawei tablet, press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.Or, you can also use the following command while your phone is connected to the PC.
    adb reboot bootloader
  2. While your Huawei is in bootloader mode, connect it to the PC and open a command-prompt/CMD window. Enter the command to ensure that your device is being fully detected by fastboot.
    fastboot devices
  3. The command should return a device ID. If it doesn’t, make sure that you have proper drivers installed.
  4. Time to unlock the bootloader. Type in:
    fastboot oem unlock <your-unlock-code>

Replace <your-unlock-code> with your device-specific code that you noted earlier. Example:

    fastboot oem unlock 2155388422526005
  5. Upon entering the command, you shall have a warning message on your device. Select Yes and the bootloader unlocking process will begin.
  6. It will only take a few seconds, and your Huawei device will have an unlocked bootloader. To make sure the process was a success, enter the command:
     fastboot getvar unlocked

  1. Hi.
I keep getting a warning message about the bootloader is unlocked.

I tried to flash TRT-TWRP-3.1.1-0818.img via FastBoot but now when I get to the above warning screen I can’t find a way to get in TWRP Recovery

    1. Hello. Please state your device name and model, so that I can provide better help. Also, which warning screen are you talking about?

  2. Hello… I need to unlock honor 7A..since huawei official page is not working… Where can i get my bootloader code from please hel0

    1. Hi Kavis. Huawei opened up bootloader unlocking for the Honor devices via XDA. But it seems like even they are not taking applications anymore. For now, there’s no real (FREE) solution to unlock the bootloader.

I suggest you wait for a little while. I will update this post IF there’s an opening again.

  3. I received a bootloader unlocking key from Huawei over email and they insist that it is correct one.
But when I tried to unlock with same I am getting a message –
    Failed (remote: password wrong)

With Fastboot Devices command, device is detected w/o any error message.
On the mobile fastboot screen it is showing FRP unlocked but device locked.
USB debugging is enabled and OEM unlock is enabled.

    Model : Honor 8 Pro DUK-L09
    Build No : DUK-L09C675B140
    EMUI : 5.1
    Android : 7.0

If you can give any suggestion, it will be great help.

    1. Hi, that seems to be odd. Everything on your phone is practically ready for unlocking.
The error explicitly states that the unlock key is wrong. What about upgrading to EMUI 8 and then trying to unlock the bootloader?

  4. Can you tell me as of till 15-Aug-2018, which is the latest version of Honor 8 Pro Firmware for India?
Has honor sorted all the bugs with their EMUI 8.0 + Android 8.0 update for honor 8 pro ? If yes, then what is version / build for same ?

If I want to unlock bootloader and root new Honor 8 Pro following your procedure then which one is better first do OTA update and then root or first root and then do manual update ? My phone is brand new and does not contain any data.

    1. Hi. Please let me know your phone’s model number. You can go to Settings -> About phone and provide me a screenshot of that, if you can.

As far as unlocking the bootloader is concerned, Huawei closed the unlocking program on 22nd July. You won’t be able to unlock the bootloader, thus, no root/TWRP/ROM or anything. Sorry.

    2. Hi
Sorry for the delay in follow up.

      Phone model no : DUK-L09
      Build No : DUK-L09C675B140
      EMUI Ver : 5.1
      Android Ver 7.0

I emailed Honor customer service and after some persuasion they had provided me bootloader unlocking code, which I’ve not yet tried.
So can you please give me some direction about my original question in the previous mail.

    3. That’s great! I see Huawei has re-opened bootloader unlocking for the Honor devices.

In my opinion, you should first update and then root the device.

    4. Thanks for replying.

Unfortunately when I tried to unlock with the code they provided, it says : remote password wrong. So I guess code was wrong. And I’ve written to them again and they said that they will get back soon.

So you are suggesting to update and then root. But what I read in the net is that EMUI 8 update is buggy, and people were facing lot of issues with battery drain, camera performance.etc. Has Honor sorted all this. Also can you tell me which is most recent ROM version for Honor 8 Pro (India)

      Thanks again

  5. I tries with bootloader code from dc-locker and it says invalid key and that its not long enough

  6. Hello Friend,

Unfortunately the “official Huawei unlock page” doesn’t exist.

Is there any alternative to get the unlock code?

    1. Hi Fahad, the unlock page has been down for quite some time now and Huawei is working on fixing it. You will have to wait for it to be live again.

  7. Hi I already unlocked my bootloader before my Huawei TIT-U02 got on bootloop but now when I boot to fastboot mode, FRP lock (in green text) was shown. Bootloader was lock again right? so all fastboot commands are a failure.

Kindly assist how to restore my bootloop phone. Thank you

    1. Hi Cris. ‘FRP lock’ is different than bootloader unlock. Above that green text, you shall also see a red-colored text saying that the bootloader is unlocked, right? Which means the bootloader was successfully unlocked.

Now, did you try anything else after you unlocked? I mean did you try flashing TWRP recovery or anything of that sorts?
