How to Downgrade ROG Phone 2 from Android 10 to Android Pie

Not happy with the new Android 10 update on your ROG Phone 2? In this guide, I will show you how to downgrade Asus ROG Phone 2 from Android 10 to Android 9 Pie. This could be done by installing the official firmware downgrade package provided directly by Asus.

Asus recently announced that the ROG Phone 2 Android 10 update has started rolling out over the air after a few months of beta. I also recently published a guide lately on how to manually install it. While the Android 10 update brings a lot of new features and improvements, it also comes with a small share of bugs. Although not significant, these bugs can hamper the overall usage and user experience of your phone.

ROG Phone 2 Android 10 Bugs & Possible Fixes

Users who have already updated their phones have been discussing the existing bugs on Android 10 over at the official ZenTalk forums.

After going through the discussion thread, I have found a list of particular bugs/issues that you might face (or have faced) on your phone after the Android 10 update on your ROG Phone 2. These are listed as follows, along with some possible solutions/fixes (if any) provided directly by Asus Reps and other fellow users on the thread.

  1. Double-tap to wake feature isn’t as responsive as on Android Pie. (Report)
    • Possible fix: Try waking your phone by tapping on the middle/center of the screen. Taping on the sides/edges doesn’t work.
  2. 4G+ speeds are dropped to below 100 Mbps but work well on other handsets. (Report)
  3. Cannot bring up the notification shade/Quick settings toggles or switch to other apps when in-call. (Report)
    • Possible fix: It’s how Asus intended it to be, according to the forum moderator. Though, it could be fixed in the future.
  4. Force-closed an app, but it is still visible in the Recent Apps (multitasking) screen.
    • Possible fix: This is the intended behavior as implemented by Google. I have this too on my Pixel 3 XL.
  5. Toast notifications shown by apps (Facebook, Asus Themes, etc) persist on the screen even after closing the apps. (Report)
    • Possible fix: Go to the Settings menu and clear the cache of the specific app that shows the toast notification message.
  6. Jittering animations when switching apps using the Recent Apps screen using navigation gestures. (Report)

As you can see, there aren’t any major bugs that could prevent you from using your phone. But there are these minor ones that could possibly affect the experience. If you upgraded to Android 10 manually, then performing a simple factory reset will probably fix a majority of these bugs. And that’s what I would primarily recommend.

Perform a factory reset to fix Android 10 Bugs on ROG Phone 2

However, if you strongly feel that the Android 10 update isn’t yet polished enough for you, then you can downgrade your ROG Phone 2 to Android 9 Pie firmware in favor of a stable experience. The process is quite easy and would just take a few minutes of your time. So, without any further ado, let us get to the instructions.

Before You Proceed

Make sure that you have fulfilled all the requirements stated below.

  • Downgrading your ROG Phone 2 to Android Pie will erase all the data stored on the phone. This includes the apps, contacts, messages, photos, videos, and everything stored on the internal storage as well. So before everything, take a complete backup of all your important data, so that you can restore it later after the downgrading process finishes. You can also go to ‘Settings’ > ‘System’ > ‘Local Backup’ on your phone for this purpose.
  • Charge your phone to a sufficient battery level so that it doesn’t switch off accidentally during the downgrade process.

Download ROG Phone 2 Android 10 Downgrade Package

Asus provides the users with an optional downgrade package with every major Android update they release. This isn’t something that many Android OEMs do, so a huge thanks to them. The downgrade package is basically the Android 9 Pie stock firmware file in the ZIP file format. It will downgrade your ROG Phone to Android Pie firmware with ‘16.0631.1910.64’ build number.

For Global Edition with ‘WW’ ROM

For Tencent Edition with ‘CN’ ROM

  6. Simply press ‘OK‘ to confirm and install the file.
  7. Once the installation finishes, press ‘Restart‘.

Your ROG Phone 2 should now successfully be downgraded to Android 9 Pie. When the phone reboots into the OS, you can go ahead, set it up, and finally restore all your data that you backed up earlier.

Note: If the method above doesn’t work, then you can flash the Android 9 RAW firmware file using a PC, which is an alternative way to downgrade. For the file links and instructions, please refer to this post.

You can always upgrade back to Android 10 using the FOTA service or through manual installation. Users have already reported Asus with the existing bugs and they should be fixed in the next OTA update.

If you have any questions regarding the downgrade procedure or regarding the Android 10 update itself, please feel free to ask via the comments. Also, please let me know of any other bugs that I might have missed in the list, it would be a good reference for other users.

    1. Yes, of course. Just as long as your ROG Phone 2 is on the correct update channel (Global or Tencent), it should receive OTA updates just fine.

    1. Hi. Do you mean the phone’s battery is draining out quickly after the Android 10 update?

Could you please go to ‘Settings’ > ‘About phone’ on your ROG Phone 2 and share the ‘build number’ of the installed Android 10 software?

  2. It’s not working at all.
I done everything whatever you said but don’t working. Does not show pop up prompt or package massage.
    Help me
Let me know other ways so I can downgrade my software.

    1. Hi Vishal. Is it the Global or the Tencent variant?

Did you copy the downgrade package to the root of your phone’s internal storage? The system will only detect the package if it’s placed there.

512gb

    1. Hi, is the Tencent edition of the ROG Phone 2 you’re using or the Global edition?

  4. Hey bro, I finally managed to downgrade to android 9 but my aura lighting is not working, is there something I can do about it??

    1. That’s great! Could you tell me what went wrong earlier?

Try performing a factory reset and see if it helps fix Aura Lighting.

  5. Hey, can you please tell me if i need to unzip the file or rename it or what? I have the Tencent edition

  6. Hey, so I went through all the steps that you have written and i am not getting any prompt when i restart my phone. I have renamed the file on my PC after downloading the zip file on my phone. Please can you help me out? I feel like my ROG phone 2 battery performance has gone down by 30-40% since updating to android 10, and i loved the battery life on my phone. Why am i not getting the prompt when i restart the phone ?

    1. Hi Aanak. Rename the downloaded file (on the phone itself) to what has been mentioned in the post.

May I know if your phone is the Tencent or the Global edition?

  7. Is the downstage package for global version or CN version..because I did everything you said and checked every details.. but still not getting the notification for the downgrade update..please help. Thanks

    1. What is the process that we need to follow for the tencent edition ? What do we need to rename the file to ? Please can you help me as soon as you can ?

    2. Hi Aanak. Go to ‘Settings’ > ‘About phone’ on your phone and check the build version installed. If it includes “WW”, then it’s the global ROM. On the other hand, if it’s “CN”, then its the China Tencent ROM.

If you have changed it in the past, I believe it should be WW with global ROM.

Are you sure that you placed the downgrade file in the root of your phone’s internal storage?

    3. Yeah it’s the one with the global version ( WW). What is the file I should use and should I unzip it or should I paste the zip folder as it is? What do you mean by the root of the phone (outside of all folders)?

    4. Hi Aanak. Is it the Tencent Edition with the global ROM installed? Did you convert it from Tencent to Global? If you purchased the phone from an official retailer in India, it should normally be the global edition.

Would it be possible for you to reach me via our Facebook page or Twitter handle over DM? It would be much quicker for me to guide you.

    5. Can you please send a video link of this happening? My phone is the WW edition and the battery life during gaming has become absolutely pathetic. The given steps just aren’t working for me :/. What exactly dk you mean by the root of the phone storage

    6. Hi Aanak. Please get in touch with me via the Facebook page, it will much quicker for me to reply there.

  8. Mine is not working. tried everything. i just updated mine to the latest A10. but not satisfied to ive wanted to downgrade. ive tried to do the steps. downloaded the links. renamed it restarted then shutdown but the downgrade notification is not showing up. ive put it in the internal folder which is outside. please help. not sure if there are any other settings i need. ive fixed the video issues which was not working with my global version. it was with the sync sound to the notification. i just unsynced it then synced it back.

    1. I renamed it in windows, and then transferred it from PC into the Phone’s Internal storage
Is that where im supposed to transfer it? and then reboot?
After rebooting there was no prompt on m phone it just started normally

  9. I restarted my phone many times after following these steps but it’s doesn’t show anything like system update file detected…can u please help me out

    1. Hi Nitin. Tell me this, when you downloaded the file, did it show the filename as “UL-ASUS_I001_1-ASUS-18.0631.2001.64-1.1.92-user” (without .zip at the end) OR as “” (with .zip at the end)?

    2. for example without .zip at the end or with .zip at the end? what should i do?

    3. Hi Rian. First off, make sure that you have enabled file extensions on your Windows PC. Instructions for that could be found here.

Once done, check the downloaded file. The filename should include .zip at the end. Then rename it to “”.

Make sure it’s NOT “”. Two “.zip” extensions at the end.

  10. If I directly download into root of internal storage without connecting to pc so does it works or pc is must and if yes then why?

    1. Hi Vishu, in that case, no, the PC isn’t required at all. If you download the file directly to the root of the phone’s internal storage and then rename the file correctly, you should be good to go.

  11. Hi there

I still don’t get with the 4th step. Is the words of This is important! on the file really needs to be attached on the name of the folder?

Where should I put the folder‘. This is important!

Should I unzip the folder? because there is no notification right after I restart my phone

    1. Hi Faxta. I put that in bold to put emphasis on the importance of that step.

The file you downloaded, does it show the name as “” or just “UL-ASUS_I001_1-ASUS-18.0631.2001.64-1.1.92-user” without the .zip added to the end?

  12. Thanks you mr Dhananjay. I successfully downgrade my rog phone 2 to android 9 pie. I just got one questing. Is it possible to downgrade to a lower firmware than “16.0631.1910.64”?

    1. Hello Kay. Asus only provides downgrade packages to roll back from major Android versions. I believe you will have to stick with 16.0631.1910.64. May I know why you would want to downgrade further?

    1. Hi Sravan. Have you tried factory resetting the phone after downgrading it?
