Nokia is ahead of several leading Android manufacturers when it comes to software updates. The company has emerged as an example of how OEMs should handle OS updates for their devices. The company’s Nokia 7 Plus was one of the few devices to get Android Pie Dev Preview. Following the Pie update for Nokia 7 Plus, the company has recently started rolling out Android Pie for the Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 6.1 Plus.

Both the phones were released this year, placed in the mid-range price segment. While both of them came with Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box, the Nokia 6.1 Plus had an upper hand being a part of the Android One program. Unlike the Nokia 6.1 Plus, the Nokia 6.1 never received any Beta update and directly made the jump to stable Android Pie software a few days ago. Right after that, the Nokia 6.1 Plus too got the Android Pie update.

Also, according to a Reddit user (u/stereomatch), who has already installed the Android Pie update on his Nokia 6.1, confirms that the call recording feature has been removed. That’s probably because Android Pie itself does an aggressive removal of the remote voice (Source). It’s for the same reason that one of the most popular voice recorders for Android – ACR, will only work if your phone is rooted on Android Pie.

    1. Hi James. The first thing to try is to manually install the November incremental OTA package via stock recovery. You can get the package from here and follow the instructions in this post on how to install it.

Make sure that you rename the file after download it to “DRG-354P-0-00WW-B01-update.zip”.

    2. Please give stock recovery app link and procedure Too it helps a lot

    3. Hello sir..
my nokia 6.1 plus not getting ota updates can you tell me how i can intall security patches manually

    4. Hi Avinash. Please let me know your phone’s model number as well as the current software build number installed on it?

  2. Actually i need to roll back my device (nokia 6.1 plus TA-1083) to Android oreo 8.1.1
Is there any way for that??

    1. Hi Robin, please go to Settings > System > About phone and let me know the exact build number installed on the phone.

  3. Don’t work for me on a Nokia 6 (2018) TA-1033 in France. Do you have an idea ?
    Oreo 8.1 PLE-558K-0-00WW-B01. Security patch January,1.
    “FILE NOT FOUND”

    1. Hi Claude. Where did you place the OTA zip package? I mean exactly which location on the internal storage?

    2. Hi Dhananjay,
In SD Card, because i can’t see internal storage (but my SD is formatted as internal memory)

    3. Hi. I am sorry, but I overlooked your first comment. You stated that the phone is a Nokia 6. This tutorial is meant for the Nokia 6.1/6.1 Plus.

    4. P.S. The Nokia 6 has not yet received Android Pie. According to the roadmap published by Juho Sarvikas (CPO, HMD Global), the Nokia 6 will get the update in the first quarter of 2019 (A definite date is yet to be announced).

  4. Is this for global version?
I followed the steps and it works well, but the full bezel is not rounded like I saw on internet, it’s straight up black square and not matched with the bottom.

    1. Hi. I am afraid that’s the default behavior of the UI. Unfortunately, you will need to wait until a further software update perfects it.

  5. Just tried it on my 6.1 plus and it works well.
But when I want to turn the Full Bezel on, it’s not rounded like the ones I saw on the internet. Just straight up square black bar on the top and it looks awful. Please help!

  6. Thanks!! It’s works on my Nokia 6.1 plus TA-1116 with oreo 8.1.0 security patch level september, 1 2018 in indonesia. My question, with this method are we still get regularly official update from Google/Nokia? Thanks B4

    1. Congrats on upgrading! Enjoy the new OS.

As for your question, yes, you will still get regular OTA updates from Google/Nokia.

  7. Hi! I wanted to say thank you. Everything works great on my Nokia 6.1. I have the TA-1045, I live in the USA.
Hey Gordan you can still go and execute the next step, everything should be fine. One more thing, when you change the name of the file, do not add “.zip” at the end, otherwise it won’t work.

  8. I have done everything the steps says but the 4th step takes me to a device info page and says “service is running” and nothing happens.
The 6th step says ” file not found”….. What am I not doing right?

    1. Hi Gordan. There are two things that could have gone wrong here:

      1) Proper filename: In step #1 you will see the corresponding filenames that you have to use. Please make sure that you download the correct OTA for your device and then rename the file accordingly.

      2) Placed file in the wrong location: The final renamed OTA package must be placed on the root of the internal storage. “Root” is basically the topmost level of the storage hierarchy. In simple words, simply connect your phone to the PC, open the internal storage and just paste the file in there. Do not move the file to any folders.

    2. I tried this and I had the same issue. “File not found”. I renamed it accordingly and placed in on the root folder.

    3. Hi Leo, please make sure that you have enabled ‘File name extensions’ on your PC. Then ensure that the filename is “PL2-3260-0-00WW-B01-update.zip” and NOT THIS “PL2-3260-0-00WW-B01-update.zip.zip” if you are using Nokia 6.1.

Similarly, it should be “DRG-330B-0-00WW-B01-update.zip” and NOT THIS “DRG-330B-0-00WW-B01-update.zip.zip” if you are using the Nokia 6.1 Plus.

    4. Hi sir am currently stuck on August security patch 2019 Android 9.. can install your Android 9 and see whether I will get October security patch.
Because I have a problem with my Google play protect certification which says not certified and causes no update.. will it brick my device because am already on Android 9?????

    5. Hi Kelvin. The OTA package provided here is the first Android Pie update available for Nokia 6.1/6.1 Plus. You cannot sideload it on top of a newer version.

Play certification wouldn’t prevent you from taking OTA updates. Go to the phone’s Settings > Apps & Notifications > See all apps. Open Google Play Store and Google Play Services app info section and clear the data for both of them. Once done, reboot your phone and check for the OTA update again.

    1. Hi Ansh. It will work for your phone in India too and will not void the warranty.

  9. The method above has an agreement screen that mentions rooting. Will this method cause my phone to be rooted?

    1. Hi Jeremy. It’s sort of a disclaimer that tells you that the method would not work if the phone is rooted. You may proceed without any issues, your phone will not be rooted or modified in any manner.
